I
was pretty bummed out this past January
when I found out they weren't planning to have a "Weekend Of
Horrors" in NYC. Their conventions have been crap for the
longest but I still look forward to them. Long gone are the days
when they booked one good guest after another, usually established
filmmakers with lots of anecdotes to tell. There's not much of a
horror scene these days and the convention reflects it. But
the sun broke through the clouds however, when I saw that Creation
was going to hold their annual horror con in NYC on my
birthday (April 7, the same as Jackie Chan and Francis Ford Coppola
) with Bruce Campbell as the headliner! I'm
sure the only reason they slapped this convention together was
because Bruce had a book to promote and they knew he could draw in a
couple thousand people at $20 a pop just on his name alone.
Actually I paid $35 dollars for a reserved seat that would land me
closer to Bruce, but I ended up in row "O", as in
"Oh, I'm way in the back!" The sad thing is that they had
preferred seats still available the day of the con in row F. Row
F!!!
Never the less, nothing was going to
bring me down on my special day. It was my birthday and I was going
to see Bruce. I had sworn years ago that if I had another
chance to meet Mr. Campbell, I would be bold enough to ask to have a
pic taken with him. Of course when presented with the opportunity
to do so this past April, I chickened out and turned to quivering
pile of goo, and happily settled for his autograph.( I did get a
good pic of him though.)
Now I was eagerly waiting for Bruce
to come back to NYC to promote his book and have a book
signing. Now imagine the odds of that day falling on his
birthday, June 22. The bookstore surprised Bruce with 2 giant cakes,
some fellow fans bought a giant birthday card which many of his fans
there signed and we all sang him Happy Birthday. He said he was
going to put that card in a "special place"! Hmmm...
Thanks Everette for letting me use your camera!
Perhaps this will be a yearly
tradition from now on, sharing birthdays with Bruce.... probably
not.....
